Film
Almost the half of a demand of SoarnoL comes from a package for meat and cheese. The demand for this application is continuously growing by request for “thinner and higher barrier” packaging from a market. SoarnoL is suitable material for vacuum packaging and MAP packaging which fills nitrogen and carbon dioxide in it. Also the barrier property of SoarnoL is higher than those of polyamide and PVDC (poly vinylidene chloride), it is possible to reduce a weight of such packaging by down gauging barrier layer thickness.
We, Mitsubishi chemical, has Soarnol™ grades applicable for wide range of packaging style. For BIB (Bag In Box) application, SoarnoL SF series which has good frex crack resistance is suitable. G-SoarnoLTM is designed for shrink and skin pack application. And for retort application, retort type SoarnoL is used which has improved anti whitening and delamination properties.

Bottle
45 years ago, in 1974, SoarnoL was started to be used as a middle layer of mayonnaise bottle. By shutting out oxygen which is a major cause of a quality of mayonnaise, a shelf life is improved very much.
Nowadays, Soarnol™ is widely used for food packaging bottle of oils, soy sauce and seasonings thanks to its high gas barrier property and also substituting grass jar because of easy handling and light weight.
Recently, two-ply bottle becomes famous for soy sauce and for this application, Soarnol™ is also essential material for this bottle.

Tube
Soarnol™ is widely used for seasoning (horse radish, mustard and garlic paste), butter and tomato paste tubes. High barrier properties of Soarnol™ reduces oxidation of contents as well as release of flavors so such a tube keeps good flavor of horse radish longer or strong smell of garlic inside.

Cup, tray
Mitsubishi Chemical developed thermoforming grades which has wider thermoformability and transparency compare to conventional EVOH. These grades are widely used not only for trays and cups for ready meal and jelly, but also for deep draw cup for chilled drink and cup for sweets required high transparency. Recently a demand of baby food cup to substitute metal can is increasing. Furthermore, Soarnol™ is used for coffee capsules due to an increasing demand of single serve coffee machine in US and Europe.

Coating
Soarnol™ can be coated onto base film and paper. Not only a pellet type for extrusion coating application, but also Soarnol™ solution type is available.
Co-extrusion coating
One example for co-extrusion coating of Soarnol™ is a paper carton for orange juice. Conventional paper carton has polyethylene as innermost layer but it absorbs limonene which is a main substrate of orange flavor so that it loses original taste. On the other hands, Soarnol™ has abilities to protect such absorption and migration so by coating Soarnol™, it’s possible to reduce a deterioration of a taste. Additionally, Soarnol™ prevent an oxidation of vitamin C and this keeps original taste of orange juice longer.

Recommended grades
Solution coating
Freshness keeping film for fruits and vegetables are examples of Soarnol™ solution coating applications.
These contents keep breezing even after harvesting and release moisture so if they are packed with polypropylene etc., condensed droplets becomes a root cause of corruption of contents. Coating of Soarnol™ makes a film hydrophilic and this reduce a generation of droplets.
